Cuphead — Mac download
Ticked

You need a game that gets straight to the fight — no filler levels, just hand-drawn boss encounters that punish mistakes and reward pattern memory.
Select your character
Pick Cuphead or Mugman and jump into a 1930s cartoon. The goal is simple: work off a debt to the Devil by taking down his other debtors across three unusual worlds.
Learn the moves
Parry pink objects to build a super meter, dash to avoid damage, and unlock special attacks as you progress. Each boss demands a different approach.
Take on the bosses
Every level is a boss fight set to an original jazz recording. No two encounters play the same — you will need quick reflexes and a solid plan for each phase.
Beating a boss: a checklist workflow
Here is a repeatable workflow for any boss encounter, from the Root Pack to King Dice.
- Learn the phases without attacking. Spend the first two runs just dodging. Watch for tells — a twitch, a sound cue, a background shift. Each phase has only a handful of patterns.
- Pick your weapon. Peashooter for raw damage. Spread for wide, short-range coverage. Chaser for fights where you need to focus on dodging. Try the Roundabout for enemies that sneak up from behind.
- Slot the right charm. Smoke Bomb adds invincibility frames to your dash — great for tight patterns. Heart gives you more HP for longer fights. Coffee builds super meter faster.
- Use supers only on the last phase. Build your meter early, then empty it when the boss is weakest. A poorly timed super leaves you vulnerable.
- Parry pink objects every chance you get. It charges your super and can save a run when you are one card short of a special.
- Watch the health bar, not the boss. The visual chaos tricks your eye. Focus on your hitbox and the projectiles near it.
Real-world scenario: local co-op evening
Two flatmates, one keyboard and a Saturday night. Player one takes Cuphead; player two takes Mugman. They have never cleared Inkwell Isle One in one sitting.
They start with Cagney Carnation. Mugman goes down in phase one — the boomerang seeds catch him mid-jump. Cuphead parries two pink projectiles, revives him on the second phase, and they empty supers together on the final stretch. Three attempts, one win. They trade the controller slot for the next fight so the weaker dodger gets more practice on the keyboard side they prefer.
By midnight they reach Baroness Von Bon Bon. Mugman handles the mini-boss adds; Cuphead focuses damage on the Baroness. The candy corn homing shot still catches them three times before they adjust their jump rhythm. They clear it on try five. One more boss down.
Remap dash to a shoulder key
- Remap dash to a shoulder key. The default jump-and-dash on face buttons makes it hard to dodge while airborne. A shoulder dash lets you aim and evade simultaneously.
- Buy Smoke Bomb first. It is the single biggest upgrade in the early game. Get it before any new weapon.
- Run the tutorial twice. The parry timing window is tighter than it looks. Practice until you can parry three pink objects in a row without touching the ground.
- Ignore the Run 'n' Gun levels at first. They are not the main event. Come back for coins when you need a specific weapon from Porkrind's Emporium.
- Watch the background. Bosses telegraph phase changes with the scenery — a moon rising, a puppet dropping, a slot machine spinning. Learn those cues and you will react before the projectile spawns.
