LIMBO is a monochrome 2D platformer about a boy searching for his missing sister.
- Check your macOS version. You need 10.13 or newer. Both Intel and Apple Silicon Macs work.
- Learn the controls. Movement and jump are the core. Grabbing objects and pushing them matters later.
- Expect deaths. The boy dies often and returns to life. That is the loop.
- Set performance expectations. This is a light 2D game. Older Macs should handle it without trouble.
A full puzzle run: the spider segment
Early in the game you reach a forest clearing where a giant spider blocks the path. The spider is invulnerable at first. Trying to walk past triggers an immediate death. The solution is indirect.
- Walk toward the spider. It will lunge. Let it happen — the boy dies and respawns.
- After the respawn, the spider retreats further into the trees. Advance slowly.
- A bear trap sits on the ground ahead. Grab the trap and drag it to the right.
- Lure the spider into the open. It will chase you. Run back past the trap.
- The spider hits the trap. One leg is now severed, and its movement becomes erratic.
- Push a nearby log into the water to create a bridge. The spider follows across.
- Lead it toward a second trap further along the path. The spider gets caught again.
- After the spider is immobilised, climb past it and pull its remaining leg off to proceed.
The sequence teaches how LIMBO communicates through failure. No prompt appears. The boy dies, you adjust, and the world reveals the next step.
How LIMBO compares with similar Mac games
Playdead's own INSIDE shares LIMBO's 2D side-scrolling and silent protagonist. INSIDE adds colour, 3D-rendered lighting, and a dystopian sci-fi setting. LIMBO feels more like a woodcut print; INSIDE feels like a camera lens. Both punish mistakes with instant death, but INSIDE hides its puzzles inside a more detailed, animated world. LIMBO is shorter and more abstract.
Little Nightmares occupies the same dark-platformer space. It uses 3D depth — the player can move toward and away from the camera. LIMBO stays locked to a single plane. Puzzles in Little Nightmares rely on stealth and chase sequences more than physics. LIMBO's puzzles are cleaner: fewer environmental clues, more trial and error. Both games use silence and sound design heavily, but LIMBO has no dialogue at all, not even background chatter.
Badland shares LIMBO's silhouette aesthetic but adds colour and a side-scrolling flying mechanic. Badland is faster-paced and built for short replayable levels. LIMBO is a single continuous journey. Where Badland feels arcade-like, LIMBO feels deliberate. Checkpoints are generous in both, but Badland rarely requires the kind of multi-step, environmental logic chains that define LIMBO. For Mac users getting a Limbo Mac torrent, the game still holds up against these newer titles because its puzzle design is precise and uncluttered.
Expect quiet tension, not speed. The game rewards patience and careful timing.
- Improvements and minor bug fixes.
- macOS 10.13 or newer

Questions the team asks
Yes, it is challenging. You die repeatedly while solving environmental puzzles, but respawning is quick and the game never becomes unfair.
