Runs on Intel Macs with a quad-core i5/i7 at 3 GHz, 8 GB RAM, and a 2 GB Metal GPU. Tested on macOS Sequoia.

Build order — you drop a construction site, assign workers, and wait for the steel to arrive. Edict — a decree that changes the rules on the spot: martial law, tax cut, or building permits for the faithful. Faction ping — a notification that the communists want housing or the capitalists want lower wages. You either deliver or distract. Export screen — you check the price of rum versus cigars and switch your dock's loadout. Speech — you pick a tone and a promise, then watch the approval needle twitch across the archipelagos you control.

Controls worth learning early

A few shortcuts save real time when you hop between islands, overlays, and construction queues.

• Hold Option while placing roads — snaps to straight lines. No more wobbly coastal routes that cost extra and look messy in the almanac.
• Ctrl + number keys — bind camera positions. I set 1 on the palace, 2 on the main dock, 3 on the power plant. Switching takes a single tap instead of dragging across the map.
• Middle-click drag — rotates the view without touching the keyboard. On a Magic Mouse, hold Option and drag.
• Tab — cycles through your construction sites. Quick way to check which site lacks teamsters or materials.
• Shift-click on an overlay panel — pins it open. The almanac normally closes when you click away; pinned, it stays while you inspect buildings.

Bump the interface to 120% on Retina

Defaults work, but a few tweaks make the game easier to read and faster to play through.

• Interface scaling — bump it to 120% on a Retina display. Text in the trade screen and faction ledger gets cramped at the default size.
• Auto-pause on disaster — on by default for volcanoes and invasions; add trade route expired and edict cooldown ended. You catch missed export windows before the treasury dips.
• Edge scrolling speed — slow it down two notches. The default pan speed overshoots on smaller island maps.
• Construction overlay opacity — drop to 60%. You can see the terrain height through the zoning grid, which matters when you place bridges between islands.
• Voice language — English, German, Spanish, Italian, and French are included. Switching the voice track to Spanish while keeping the interface in English gives the radio announcers a different flavour. Easy to miss if you only check the interface language list.

Queue raids from the palace instead of the garrison

Nothing in the tutorial points these out. Each saves a few clicks per session.

• Raid scheduling from the palace tab — you can queue a ransom raid, a treasure hunt, and a commando distraction without opening the commando garrison view. Do it during a pause, then forget about it.
• Teamster priority per building — click a building, open the Logistics panel, tick the priority box. Raw resources from that mine reach the dock before the rum distillery's sugar delivery. Good when a freighter is due in 60 days.
• Constitution pause combo — open the constitution screen, pause the game, then adjust policies. You can test how a change shifts faction standings before committing. Cancel and nothing happens; accept and the effects roll out the moment you unpause.
• Cable car overlap trick — cable cars don't need a road connection at both ends. A station near a bus route on one cliff and a footpath on the other still works. Cuts construction cost on steep volcanic islands.
• Drag-queue for taxis — hold Shift when placing taxi garages. You set multiple stations in one gesture, then fine-tune the routes afterward.

Quick facts

Intel Mac stutter on large maps

By the late colonial era, population climbs past 800 and the frame rate dips. Drop Draw Distance to Medium and switch Texture Quality one step down. The art style holds up. On an x86 Mac tested under Sequoia, that brought the simulation tick back to a steady crawl.

Bridges refuse to place between islands

The terrain height difference is the usual culprit. Press F1 for the elevation overlay. If the two shore points differ by more than one contour line, the bridge tool refuses. Terra-form a ramp on the higher side first, then try again. Some players running a Tropico torrent can verify this is working as intended — the height check is just strict, so adjust the terrain and you're set.

Trade routes not fulfilling

Check three things: the dock has a teamster assigned, the export storage hasn't hit capacity, and no embargo is active with that power. The trade panel shows a "blocked" icon if an edict or constitution clause interferes. Cancel the route, wait one game day, re-sign it. That clears stale route locks that sometimes linger after an election.

Edicts greyed out with enough Swiss bank funds

Some edicts require a specific faction relationship, not just money. The Martial Law edict wants the militarists above 50 standing. Hover over the greyed-out button — the tooltip lists what's missing, but the text is small. Crank interface scaling up to read it.
