No Man’s Sky — Mac download
Ticked

18 quintillion planets. That is the scale of the map. Each star is the light of a distant sun, with inhabited worlds in orbit.
Core content
You get a ship, a multi-tool, and an exosuit. All three can be upgraded. The galaxy is shared. Every player exists in the same universe. Discoveries are recorded and visible on a map of known space. Mac players are not isolated; Hello Games supports cross-play.
Three modes of play
The game does not lock you into one role. You can choose to fight hostile forces, trade resources between systems, or simply explore the procedurally generated terrain. Every planet has unique geography and life forms.
First days after installing
A new save drops you on a hazardous planet with a broken ship. The first hour is the steepest. Treat it as an extended tutorial, not a race.
- Gather sodium and ferrite dust before anything else. Your hazard protection depletes fast. Sodium recharges it. Ferrite dust fixes damaged components on your scanner and mining beam.
- Follow the Awakenings quest until you own the hyperdrive blueprint. Straying too far before that makes progress clunky. The quest line hands you essential blueprints for free.
- Turn off PvP in network settings. Cross-play means you share the galaxy with other platforms. Friendly fire is on by default. A quick settings check under Options - Network saves you a headache later.
- Use photo mode to scout. The camera can fly up high and look around. It pauses the game but shows real terrain and resources. You spot cave entrances and mineral deposits without wasting life support.
- Claim a base computer early. Even a bare-bones base with a teleporter gives you a waypoint you can return to from any space station. No need to build big; just drop it and move on.
How it compares to similar Mac space games
No Man's Sky vs. Elite Dangerous
Elite Dangerous sticks to a realistic, Milky Way scale. Planets are barren except for a thin layer of surface activity. No Man's Sky takes the opposite approach. Every planet teems with life and colour. The flight model in Elite leans on simulation; No Man's Sky keeps it arcade-simple. If you want orbital mechanics and docking procedures, Elite fits. If you want to land on a glowing mushroom world without a loading screen, No Man's Sky delivers.
No Man's Sky vs. Everspace 2
Everspace 2 is a story-driven looter-shooter in space. Combat is tighter, more kinetic, and the ships handle like fighters in an action game. But you never leave your cockpit. No Man's Sky hands you a multi-tool and puts you on foot, underground, underwater, or inside derelict freighters. The exploration layer runs far deeper. Everspace 2 gives you crafted set-pieces; No Man's Sky gives you a procedural universe to wander.
No Man's Sky vs. Subnautica
Subnautica works on a single, hand-crafted ocean planet. The survival loop is tighter because every fragment and wreck is placed by a designer. No Man's Sky spans a full galaxy with base-building across star systems. Subnautica's horror creeps in slowly, alone. No Man's Sky lets you summon friends, build a fleet, or manage a settlement. Both games scratch the crafting-and-exploration itch, but No Man's Sky trades curated tension for sheer breadth.
Common snags and how to sort them out
- Frame rate stutter on planet approach. The Mac version uses a Metal-based rendering pipeline. On first entry to a new planet, shaders compile. Let the game sit for fifteen seconds after landing. The stutter clears and does not return for that biome. Dropping shadow quality to High instead of Ultra helps on M-series chips without much visual cost.
- Multiplayer anomaly not showing friends. Cross-play requires everyone to have multiplayer enabled. If a friend appears offline, check that your system clock is set automatically. A mismatched time zone blocks session handshakes between platforms.
- Exosuit inventory always full. Every new star system lets you buy one inventory slot at the space station and summon the Anomaly for a second slot. Do this in every system you visit. Early-game storage pressure eases fast once you stick to that routine.
- Terrain manipulator won't mine certain deposits. Switch the manipulator mode from terrain to a different size setting with the cycle button. Some compact mineral formations need the smallest beam radius to register.
- Quests directing you to an unreachable system. Open the galaxy map and make sure the current mission is selected in the Log tab. The path lines recalculate. If the target is too far, drop into the nearest space station and use the teleporter. Station list often shows a shortcut to a previously visited system closer to the objective.
