Old World — Mac download
Ticked

Before leading a nation in Civilization IV, Soren Johnson defined its design. Old World is his take on a historical 4X strategy game, now managing an empire across generations.
Does Old World run on a Mac?
Yes. The current build includes native support for both Intel and Apple Silicon Macs. Crash debugging specific to macOS arrived in the latest update.
Runs smoothly on Apple Silicon and Intel Macs
Mohawk Games does not publish a single minimum macOS version, but the title runs on a wide range of recent Macs. Expect smooth performance on Apple Silicon, with Intel Macs handling the game well at moderate map sizes.
Mouse and keyboard only, no gamepad support
Standard mouse and keyboard input works identically to the Windows version. There is no gamepad support, and the interface scales clearly on Mac Retina displays.
Can I play mods and multiplayer on the Mac?
Yes. Mod support is built in, and multiplayer works through hotseat, asynchronous play, and cloud play. The interface can be set to English, Russian, German, French, Spanish, Japanese, or Chinese.
How Old World fits with other apps and macOS features
Old World behaves like a well-behaved Mac citizen. It respects standard full‑screen mode and the Mission Control workspace. Swipe left to a separate desktop for a wiki or a note app without the game fighting for focus.
Notifications are paused automatically during play. The game does not hijack media keys, so background music from a separate app stays in your control. Screen sharing tools and Discord screen capture pick up the window without workarounds on Apple Silicon.
Save files live in a standard folder inside ~/Library/Application Support. That means Time Machine backups cover every campaign automatically. If you use a clipboard manager, event text and character names copy out as plain text — handy for keeping a running log of your dynasty outside the game.
Keyboard Maestro and BetterTouchTool scripts can trigger screenshots or timestamped note entries mid‑session. The lack of intrusive launchers or kernel extensions keeps the install footprint small and easy to quarantine with a separate user account for testing mods.
Polybolos hit harder with a +50% attack boost
Build 84658 shifted three things that show up within the first hour of a new campaign.
- Polybolos now hit harder. The +50% attack boost makes them a genuine threat to advancing infantry. A well‑placed Polybolos unit on a hill no longer just plinks at shields — it routs light units before they close the distance.
- Forts cannot touch. The rule blocking adjacent Forts forces more careful placement. You now leave gaps that cavalry can exploit, which changes how you defend mountain passes and river crossings.
- AI unit composition is leaner. Fewer Militia, Conscripts, and outdated units mean the AI fields more relevant stacks. Wars feel faster and less like cleaning up chaff. The Mac crash debugging added under the hood keeps long multiplayer sessions stable.
A campaign workflow: securing a dynasty in the first generation
- Open the game and pick a scenario. Start with the pre‑made Greece map. Choose a kingdom with a young ruler and at least two noble families with high Courage.
- Pause and scan the family tree. Open the dynasty panel. Note the ages of your spouse and all children. Decide which child to educate for Wisdom and which for Charisma. Betroth the eldest to a family that controls iron.
- Spend the first five Orders on scouting. Send two units in opposite directions. Uncover barbarian camps before they spawn raiders. Use the remaining Orders to assign a governor with a high Discipline stat to your border city.
- Trigger an ambition early. Pick an ambition that matches your ruler's Courage. Completing it within 20 years locks in a legitimacy bonus that smooths succession.
- Build a Polybolos before turn 30. Station it on a hill tile two hexes from your capital. The new attack value lets it hold a flank alone while you expand the opposite direction with your main stack.
- Check events every turn. Over 3,000 events shape the campaign. Accept ones that raise family opinion even at a small gold cost. Decline events that trade legitimacy for short‑term science — the hit compounds over a long reign.
- Expire a ruler intentionally. Around turn 60, send an ageing ruler on a risky campaign. An heir with prepared stats and a secure betrothal inherits a kingdom with clear borders, a fortified capital, and a stocked treasury.
Save the scenario after succession. You now have a template for future campaigns on random maps, where the same checklist adapts to unpredictable terrain and different noble families.
- Polybolos gain +50% attack strength.
- Forts can no longer be placed adjacent to another Fort.
- AI produces fewer Militia, Conscripts, and obsolete units.
- Added Mac-specific crash debugging.
- macOS (exact version not specified by developer)
- Intel and Apple Silicon supported
