Stray runs on Apple Silicon Macs with macOS 12.0 or later. You play as a lost cat navigating the neon-lit streets and dirty alleys of a long-abandoned cybercity. A small flying drone named B-12 joins you as you work to solve an ancient mystery and find a way out.

Basements, rooftops, and a drone sidekick

  • A third-person adventure through basements, rooftops and decaying urban spaces
  • B-12, a drone companion that translates, stores items and unlocks doors
  • Unusual environmental interactions — scratch walls, knock objects off ledges, squeeze through gaps
  • A living city filled with robots, each with their own routines and stories
  • Puzzles woven into the environment, not signposted — observe and experiment
  • A single-player narrative with no combat; survival is about agility and curiosity

Everything revolves around seeing the city from a cat's height. You jump across air ducts, weave through cluttered apartments and pause to curl up on a cushion. The mystery unfolds through the places you squeeze into, not through long explanations.

Workflow: getting the transceiver from the Rooftops chapter

A typical early-game task. Elliott's flat has the transceiver you need, but the door is locked and the robot won't budge. Here's the sequence.

  1. Scratch the apartment door. Elliott opens it, annoyed. Slip inside.
  2. Knock the stack of books off the shelf near the window. Behind them, a key drops to the floor. Pick it up.
  3. Use the key on the locked cupboard in the corner. Inside, a broken transceiver.
  4. Carry the transceiver to B-12. The drone diagnoses it: missing a fuse.
  5. Exit through the window onto the ledge. Follow the pipe down to the lower balcony.
  6. Inside the small workshop, hop onto the table. A fuse sits in a half-open drawer — paw it out.
  7. Return to Elliott's flat. B-12 installs the fuse. Transceiver works.

The game never tells you to check behind the books. You learn to paw at anything that looks loose. After this chapter, that instinct sticks.

Meow on demand with B

  • Hold B to meow on demand. It has no gameplay function, but droids sometimes react. In the Slums, Morusque the musician smiles when you meow near him.
  • Double-tap jump to cancel a climb. The cat starts scaling a pipe and the camera swings badly — double-tap Space to drop off mid-climb.
  • B-12's flashlight is directional. Rotate the camera, not the cat, to aim it into dark corners. Cat eyes see only so much.
  • Doorways with a scrap of cloth hanging over them are passable. If cloth moves when you brush it, walk through. No prompt appears.
  • Sleep spots are save points. Curling up on a cushion or a pile of blankets triggers a manual save. Use them before tricky platforming.
  • Zurks ignore you if you stand still against a wall. Their tracking relies on movement. In tight alleys, freeze and wait for them to scuttle past.

Most players miss the meow button reaction from NPCs — it is never listed in controls. A stray mac dmg install takes two minutes, and those first rooftop moments are worth watching for the details.
