BAD END THEATER is a puzzle visual novel where you steer a cast of characters towards their worst possible fates to unlock the true ending.

Pick your tragedy’s lead from four archetypes

Here's the workflow once you launch the game.

  1. Pick a protagonist. Choose from four characters — the hero, the maiden, the underling, or the overlord.
  2. Make decisions. Each story is a short branching narrative. Your job is not to win. It's to find every bad end.
  3. Unlock new routes. Decisions in one character's story ripple into the others. A dead end for the hero might open a path for the maiden.
  4. Fill the grid. The theatre screen tracks every ending. Collect them all to access the final act.

Scope

The package includes 16,000 words across multiple branching scenarios, backed by 600 illustrations. Completionists can expect to spend between one and three hours uncovering every ending and route.

Workflow: unlocking every maiden ending

Start by picking the maiden. Your first run will feel straightforward — make choices, reach a bad end. It's what the game expects.

  1. Run it blind once. Pick whatever feels natural. Note your ending on the theatre grid.
  2. Cross-reference the underling. Switch characters. The underling's second bad end (the one in the dungeon corridor) flags a locked maiden route. Remember the detail — a red scarf on a hook.
  3. Replay the maiden with the flag active. The scarf now appears as a selectable option in her second scene. Choose it. This opens a path unavailable on your first attempt.
  4. Exhaust the variants. The maiden has three endings that branch from the scarf route. Two are obvious; the third requires refusing help twice, then accepting it late. That one fills the bottom-right slot on the grid.

Logic puzzles in a tragedy skin, no file tricks

BAD END THEATER vs. Doki Doki Literature Club. Both subvert visual novel expectations, but where DDLC breaks the fourth wall with psychological horror, BAD END THEATER stays playful. It's a logic puzzle dressed as a tragedy. No sudden file manipulation, no existential dread — just careful route-mapping.

BAD END THEATER vs. Long Live the Queen. Both are short-form branching sims about steering a character to doom, but Long Live the Queen layers stats and schedules over the narrative. BAD END THEATER strips that away. Pure choice, no grinding. A one-hour session here covers what Elodie's skill checks spread across a week.

BAD END THEATER vs. Zero Escape: Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors. Both treat bad endings as collectibles essential to the true route. 999 weaves escape-room puzzles between its branches; BAD END THEATER keeps the puzzles in the narrative structure itself. Lower stakes, shorter runtime, fewer locked safes.
