Barony runs on Apple Silicon and Intel 64-bit Macs, tested on macOS Tahoe with a Mac mini 2024 M4.

Roguelike — permadeath means every run is final. One mistake ends the character.

First-person 3D — you see the dungeon through your character's eyes, not from above.

Online co-op — play with others over the internet.

Permadeath — no reloading an old save. Death is part of the run.

Level editor — build your own dungeon layouts inside the game.

Open asset libraries — the game files are available for custom content.

Inventory dragging — move items by dragging them in the inventory and character-stat windows.

Easter eggs — developer surprises are hidden in the build.

Mysterious messages — odd text can appear as you explore.

Blocking beats swinging when stamina runs out

  • Treating it like a hack-and-slash. Swinging at everything you see burns stamina fast. Blocking and sidestepping matter more than aggression in the early levels.
  • Ignoring the hunger mechanic. New players forget food spoils and characters starve. Rations are not optional loot — they are a timer on every floor.
  • Standing still to read scrolls. Reading mid-combat leaves you defenceless. A skeleton does not pause while you decipher an enchantment.
  • Hoarding unidentified gear. Wearing a cursed ring without checking it first has ended countless runs. Use scrolls of identify before equipping anything unknown.
  • Splitting the party in co-op. Wandering alone means no one can revive you. Stick together, especially when someone triggers a boulder trap.
  • Underestimating light sources. Torches run out. A dark corridor hides pits and enemies. Keep a spare lantern or spell handy.

Picking a cleric while friends roll warrior and rogue

You launch the game and pick a class — say, a cleric. The character sheet shows low strength but decent magic. You jump into a co-op lobby with two friends. One takes a warrior, the other a rogue.

Floor one loads. Stone walls, torchlit corridors, the distant clatter of a skeleton. The warrior leads, shield up. The rogue checks side passages for traps. You hang back, ready with a healing spell.

Someone spots a chest. The rogue checks for traps — finds a poison dart trigger. Disarmed. Inside: a ring. Nobody touches it yet. The warrior drops a scroll of identify from their pack. You read it aloud. Ring of levitation. Decent, but not worth swapping out a protection ring for. It goes into shared inventory.

A troll rounds the corner. The warrior blocks two swings while you cast slow. The rogue circles behind for backstab damage. Troll drops. Loot split quickly — food to the warrior, mana potion to you.

Stairs down appear. You pause to check hunger bars. The rogue's is low. They eat cooked rat meat. The party descends together. Floor two has a boulder trap the rogue misses. Boulder hits the warrior. Half health gone. You burn a major heal. Lesson: never rush stairs without scanning the landing zone.

Two more floors pass. Someone finds a secret room behind a cracked wall — developer easter egg, a room full of cheese wheels. Silly, but the food stock helps. By floor six, the rogue dies to a minotaur charge. No revive possible. Permadeath. The remaining two push on, quieter now, until a cursed amulet drains the warrior's strength and a gelatinous cube finishes the run.

Back to character select. You laugh. You pick a wizard this time. The seed changes. The dungeon does not care about your last run.

Interface language: English.
