If you know the weight of every choice in This War of Mine, 11 bit studios applies that same moral gravity to a city scale here. One wrong law can unravel a colony.

What does the game ask you to manage?

Food rations, work hours, medical care and heat levels. You also set laws that shape society, pushing it towards harsh rule, faith or compassion.

How does technology progress?

Research leads to steam automatons and airships. These shift labour from people to machines, changing how you plan districts and resource flows.

Steam hubs before generator range upgrade

Even a well-drilled city can stall on a few recurring issues. Most have a simple fix once you spot the pattern.

  • Generator range upgrade comes too late. Don't research range first. A single steam hub placed near three workplaces covers more ground for less coal. Research heater upgrades and hub efficiency instead.
  • Scouts return with nothing useful. Send scouts with faster sledges first. Prioritise locations marked with a question mark on the map — they usually unlock new outpost sites or lost supply caches.
  • Hothouse vs hunters — wrong pick. Hothouses need a steam core and constant heat. Hunters work at any temperature and don't occupy building space inside the heat zone. On maps with plenty of open edges, hunters often outperform.
  • Hope drops too fast after a death. Don't sign the cemetery law too early. A corpse pit actually delays the hope hit. Save the cemetery for when discontent spikes and you need the small boost it gives.
  • Overdrive melts the generator. Never run overdrive above 80% stress unless it is an emergency. Assign an automaton or two workers to the generator during the night shift to keep the stress gauge from creeping up while you sleep.
  • Steam cores wasted on the wrong tech. Cores are scarce. Spend your first two on a wall drill and an infirmary. Everything else can wait.

Late-game CPU hit with 500+ citizens

On an Intel Mac meeting the recommended specs — 2.6GHz i7, 16 GB RAM, Radeon Pro 560X — the game runs at a steady 50–60 fps on medium settings at 1440p. The late game does push the CPU. When 500 citizens queue for the cookhouse, frame pacing stutters for a second. Nothing that breaks the session, but noticeable.

RAM usage sits around 6–8 GB during normal gameplay. With a large city in endless mode, it climbs to 10 GB. The app itself is around 9 GB on disk. Startup from an SSD takes under 15 seconds. On a 2020 M1 MacBook Air running through Rosetta 2, the experience is smoother than expected — 45–60 fps on low settings, with fans rarely audible until a blizzard hits.

The game is stable. I see maybe one crash in a 40-hour playthrough, usually tied to a save-load cycle during a storm event. Autosave is daily by default, so data loss is minimal. Patch 1.6.1 ironed out most of the memory leaks that used to bloat the process after a few hours. Still, a restart every three hours keeps the UI snappy.

Zero-downtime generator goal for a spreadsheet planner

Picture a transport logistics manager who spends their workday in Excel and their evenings in Factorio. They open Frostpunk on endless mode — Builders variant, Rifts map. The goal is a fully automated city with zero generator downtime and a surplus of 5,000 coal.

They start by mapping heat zones on a notepad. Steam hubs go down before the first housing district is placed. Research order is drawn on a sticky note: beacon, faster gathering, steam hub, heater, wall drill, infirmary. No wasted techs. Scouts are out by day four. By day 20, automatons run the steelworks, the wall drill and two coal thumpers. Humans only work in cookhouses, infirmaries and workshops.

The big test comes on day 35 — a three-day storm at -110°C. Overdrive is tripped once, but the infirmary holds. No amputations. Coal stockpile is at 8,200. The city runs itself. That's the rhythm this kind of player chases: a clean build where every cog fits.

Three variants: Endurance tests your limits, Builders focuses on construction goals, and Serenity strips the harshest survival pressure for a calmer pace.
