Rise of the Tomb Raider is an action-adventure game that follows Lara Croft's expedition into Siberia to find the secret of immortality.
Uncovering a lost legend with a capable survivor
- Uncovering a lost legend. The story pulls you through frozen wilderness and ancient tombs in search of a truth that could change everything.
- Playing a capable survivor. Lara moves, climbs and fights with a grounded physicality. Crafting gear from salvage feels practical, not like busywork.
- Mixing stealth and combat. You choose how to handle each encounter. Slip through the trees undetected or craft ammunition and fight head-on.
- Exploring optional challenge tombs. These side areas strip away combat and focus purely on environmental puzzles.
- External graphics support. eGPUs are officially supported on macOS, giving you more headroom on compatible hardware.
Heavy system demands and uneven pacing
- Heavy system demands. You need 36GB of free space, 8GB of RAM and a dedicated graphics card with at least 1.5GB of memory. It will not run on Apple Silicon natively.
- Pacing varies. The mix of quiet exploration and loud action sequences means the rhythm shifts sharply between chapters.
- No multiplayer focus. The experience is a single-player narrative. If you prefer competing against others, this won't scratch that itch.
Common questions before installing
Rosetta 2 only, snow and particles test your chip
The build is x86 64‑bit only. It runs through Rosetta 2 on Apple Silicon Macs, not natively. Performance depends on your specific chip and cooling — some machines handle it well, others drop frames during heavy snow and particle effects in the Siberian sections.
What if the game won't launch?
After dragging the app to Applications, wait a few moments before opening it. If nothing happens, open Rise of the Tomb Raider.app/Contents/MacOS/ and run the file named load directly. That usually kicks things into motion.
How much space does it really need?
The listed requirement is 36GB free. In practice, leave a little extra for save files and temporary unpacking during first launch. External drives work if they are fast enough — a USB‑C SSD is fine, a spinning disk will slow loading times noticeably.
What the 20 Year Celebration edition changed
Version 1.0.4 fixed brings the full 20 Year Celebration package to macOS. In everyday play, that means the Blood Ties story chapter is included — a quieter, exploration‑heavy segment set inside Croft Manor. You also get the Endurance mode co‑op option, zombie combat in Lara's Nightmare, and a handful of classic skins that swap her outfit to earlier game looks. For Mac users, the bigger practical change in this build is official eGPU support. If you run a supported enclosure, you can push settings higher without melting your machine.
