The Colonists — Mac download
Ticked

One robot lands on an empty planet with exactly zero buildings and one instruction: build a colony.
Gather and produce
Your first task. Place a lumberjack hut, a stone mine, and a fishing dock. Watch the bots shuttle between nodes, turning raw wood and stone into planks and bricks. Add a wheat farm and a windmill; now you have bread. Every new building adds another link to the chain.
Connect the routes
Roads, harbours, and railways. A quarry three islands over needs a boat route. A mountain iron mine demands a rail line. You spend most of your time tracing paths on the map, solving bottlenecks where fifteen bots queue for one signal. Get the network right and the colony hums.
Expand or fight
Send an expedition ship to scan new land. In sandbox mode you shape the island at your own pace. On the military mission path you face an AI colony and build watchtowers, barracks, and cannons. Same bots, new priority.
Skip mission one, start a sandbox first
Skip the campaign mission one until you have the basics. Sandbox mode gives you room to fail without a timer.
- Place a stone mine and a lumberjack hut within four tiles of the warehouse. Shorter trips, faster early stock.
- Build two fishing docks before your first farm. Fish needs no processing chain, bread does.
- Watch the energy overlay (E key). A red zone means a building starves. Fix the supply before adding new production.
- Set a storage yard near any cluster of raw-material buildings. Bots waste half their day walking otherwise.
- Roads are free. Lay them everywhere. A dirt path doubles movement speed.
Daily use feel
The Colonists runs light. On an Apple Silicon Mac the colony boots in under eight seconds and sits quietly at 60 fps with two hundred bots on screen. No fan spin, no stutter when you scroll across the map at speed. The save system writes a file in under a second, so you quicksave before every harbour placement without breaking flow.
Memory use stays below 1 GB for a midsize settlement. Late-game railway networks with sixty signals and multiple trains do not drop the frame rate. The only hitch: pathfinding around dense forest can pause a bot for a half-second, noticeable only at 4× speed. Reliable enough to leave running on a second desktop while you handle other tasks.
- macOS (Apple Silicon and Intel)
Questions the team asks
Yes, it runs on macOS, Windows, and Linux.
