Thief: Master Thief Edition — Mac download
Ticked

Getting a Windows game to run smoothly on macOS can feel like cracking a safe without the combination. Thief: Master Thief Edition brings The City's gothic shadows to the Mac, but only with the right setup. You control Garrett, a master thief, through missions built on stealth, lock picking, and guard evasion.
- Intel Mac required. This is an x86 (64-bit) app. Apple Silicon machines need Rosetta 2 or a virtualisation layer.
- Expect 30–60 fps on older Intel hardware with integrated graphics. A dedicated GPU makes the dark alleys and rain-slick rooftops playable at higher settings.
- Keyboard and mouse controls map cleanly. Movement, leaning, and lock picking work without a controller remap, though a gamepad feels more natural for creeping through vaults.
- Language support covers eight interface and voice options: English, French, German, Italian, Spanish, Polish, Russian, Czech.
- The edition packs extra missions and challenge maps. The Bank Heist mission and The Forsaken challenge map add hours beyond the main campaign.
Performance depends on your machine's graphics. A Mac with a discrete GPU handles the dynamic lighting and fog without stutter. The install is straightforward if you follow the folder selection step carefully.
Black screen at launch and folder picker that asks twice
- Folder selection repeats twice. The popup asking for the ThiefData folder sometimes appears again after the first pick. Just point it to the same folder a second time — it sticks after that.
- Black screen on launch. Usually a missing Rosetta 2 installation on Apple Silicon. No prompt appears; you need to install it manually via Terminal with
softwareupdate --install-rosetta. - Audio crackling or missing voices. Switch the voice language away from your current setting, apply, then switch back in OPTIONS > AUDIO > TEXT LANGUAGE. This rebuilds the audio cache.
- Save files not writing. Run the game from a folder your user account owns — avoid system directories or read-only external drives. A Documents subfolder works cleanly.
- Low frame rates on Intel HD Graphics. Drop shadow quality to Low and disable SSAO. The gothic atmosphere holds up, and you gain 10–15 fps in rain-heavy scenes.
Ghosting missions without a single takedown
- Stealth purists. Garrett's toolkit — water arrows, blackjack, lock picks — rewards patience over combat. If you ghost missions without a single takedown, this edition's Ghost booster pack fits your style.
- Completionists. The Bank Heist mission and Forsaken challenge map extend playtime well past the credits. Digital extras — art book, soundtrack, comic — sit right in the game folder.
- Older Intel Mac owners. The x86 build runs on machines the Mac App Store's Shadow Edition left behind. A 2015 MacBook Pro with Iris Pro graphics handles it at medium settings.
Clunky combat won't satisfy action-first players
- Action-first players. Combat is clunky by design. If you want to fight guards head-on rather than slip past them, the Predator booster pack won't change your mind enough.
- Retina display purists. Interface scaling at native resolution shows its age. Text and icons look soft on high-DPI screens — a 2014 game running on 2020s panels.
- macOS (Intel, x86 64-bit)
