Check the formats and hosts
Covers VST2, VST3, AU and AAX. Opens in Ableton Live, Logic Pro, FL Studio, Cubase, Pro Tools, Studio One, Bitwig, Reaper and Reason without fuss.
Set up your system
Runs native on Intel and Apple Silicon Macs. Needs macOS 10.15 or later, right through to Tahoe 26. Interface resizes to fit your screen.
Dial in the decade
Twenty styles and 460 patterns pull from Linn, Roland, Simmons and Korg circuitry. MIDI drag and drop sends patterns straight to your timeline. Twist the Time Machine control for instant gated reverb and snare pitch shifts that land squarely in 1985.
First days: get the kit in order
Day one with a fresh plug-in needs a checklist. Here is mine for VICE.
- Open the UJAM App first. Let it scan what is installed. VICE sits inside the Beatmaker host—no host, no kit.
- Load a preset kit, then resize the window to your monitor before you touch a fader. Bigger panel, fewer misclicks.
- Pick one style. Do not browse all twenty. Lock into "Synthwave Essentials" or "Gated Pop" and drag five patterns to your DAW timeline. Listen dry. Then add one effect.
- Tag two patterns as keepers. Delete the rest. Build a shortlist, not a museum.
- Check MIDI drag works in your DAW. Some hosts need the track armed first. Logic and Studio One are forgiving. FL Studio wants a pattern clip slot ready.
First-week install snags and fixes
Three things come up in the first week.
Plug-in does not show in the DAW. Close the session. Run the UJAM App, confirm the Beatmaker host installed alongside VICE. If you grabbed a ujam torrent or a ujam mac torrent, sometimes the host installer sits in a separate folder. Run it manually, then rescan plug-ins.
Patterns drag as audio, not MIDI. VICE sends audio by default if you drag from the wrong spot. Use the MIDI icon near the pattern name—the little piano-roll symbol. Drag that. Not the waveform.
Time Machine knob does nothing. It needs a pattern playing. Stop the transport, twist the knob, then hit play. The effect triggers on the next cycle. Also check you are not in Bypass mode on the master strip.
A synthwave producer's first evening
Picture a producer wrapping up a retrowave EP. Vocals are tracked. Basslines pulse. But the drums sound too clean—modern samples that sit wrong against the Juno pads.
They load VICE on a drum bus. Kit 04: "LinnDrum Processed." Style: "Outrun Chorus." Pattern 12 drops a punchy kick-snare grid with sixteenth-note hats. MIDI drag to the timeline, then a quick pitch shift on the snare via Time Machine—down three semitones for that Simmons-style thwack.
They layer pattern 47 underneath: tom fills that pan hard left and right. Gated reverb at 60% wet. The whole drum stem runs through a tape emulation on the mix bus. Thirty minutes from loading the plug-in to printing the stem. No sample hunting. No EQ carving. It already fits.
- macOS 10.15 or later
- Intel or Apple Silicon Mac
- VST2, VST3, AU or AAX host
Questions the team asks
It draws from classic 1980s units by Linn, Roland, Simmons and Korg, tuned for synthwave and retro pop.
Yes. Any of the 460 preset patterns can be dragged directly onto a MIDI track in your host.
It runs natively on both Intel and Apple Silicon Macs from macOS 10.15 upwards.
