Screen design, prototypes and sharing in a stable tool
The core workflow has not moved. XD remains in maintenance mode, so no major feature work is planned. What you get is a stable tool for designing screens, linking them into prototypes, and sharing previews. Interface languages cover English, German, Spanish, French, Russian, Portuguese, Japanese, Korean, and Simplified Chinese.
macOS support and free access after maintenance mode
Does it still run on the latest macOS? Yes. Version 59.0.12 launches on macOS 10.15 and up, including Sequoia. Both Intel and Apple Silicon Macs are supported natively.
Is it free? Adobe moved XD into maintenance mode. You can find an adobe xd mac download with the full feature set. The app lets you design, prototype, and share without restriction once installed.
Does it need a Creative Cloud subscription? Not for local use. You can run it offline with a straightforward setup. Some people grab Adobe CC Mac torrent packages that include it, but a standalone Adobe XD Mac torrent works fine too.
Can I still export assets? Yes. SVG, PNG, PDF, and JPG exports all work. You can also mark layers for export in batch and pull assets into developer handoff.
Will my old XD files open? Every .xd file from earlier versions opens in 59.0.12. You can also import Sketch and Photoshop files via the File menu.
What about plug-ins? The plug-in panel still works. Popular ones—Icons 4 Design, UI Faces, Stark—keep running. The ecosystem is not growing, but the existing library is solid.
Workflow: designing a mobile onboarding flow from scratch
- Start with an iPhone 15 artboard from the preset list. Name it "Onboarding – Step 1."
- Open the Repeat Grid panel. Drag in a profile avatar and two text layers. Set the grid to 3 columns. Pull sample data from a local text file to populate names and roles.
- Build three more artboards for steps 2, 3, and 4. Keep navigation buttons in the same position on every screen—responsive resize locks them to the bottom edge.
- Switch to Prototype mode. Wire the "Next" button on each artboard to the following one. Set the trigger to Tap and the action to Auto-Animate. Ease-in-out, 0.3 seconds.
- Add a hover state to the "Skip" button with a subtle opacity change. Micro-interactions make the flow feel responsive.
- Drop a full-screen overlay for the final "Done" state. Link it from step 4 with a dissolve transition.
- Click the Play button in the top-right corner. Test the entire flow in the desktop preview window. Tweak timings until the sequence feels natural.
- Hit Share. Choose "Share for review." Copy the link and send it to the team. They can comment directly on each screen.
How Adobe XD fits with other apps and macOS
XD works best as the centre of a stack, not the whole stack.
Pull colours and character styles from Creative Cloud Libraries. Updates sync across XD, Photoshop, and Illustrator. Drop icons from Illustrator straight onto an XD artboard—they stay editable as vectors.
Export screens to Adobe After Effects using the AEUX plug-in for motion design that prototyping mode cannot reach. That is useful for onboarding animations or micro-interaction walkthroughs.
On the macOS side, XD respects system-wide colour profiles and renders text through Core Text. It works with Sidecar, so you can push the preview window to an iPad and test touch interactions while you edit on the Mac. Spotlight indexes .xd files, and Quick Look shows thumbnail previews in Finder.
For handoff, development teams often use Zeplin or Avocode. XD's built-in share links serve the same role—developers inspect specs without a separate tool. Some teams run an Adobe XD crack Mac setup purely for the design-to-spec pipeline, keeping one machine locked to 59.0.12 for stability across long projects.
