Late-night lab: a virologist’s solo run
A research virologist on parental leave fires up the Mac after midnight. She picks a fungus pathogen, starts in Madagascar, and watches the world ignore it for months. Once infected ports ship spores to Brazil, she spends DNA points on drug resistance and cold hardiness. Greenland is the last holdout. The run takes 47 minutes — tight, methodical, no restarts. For simulation thinkers who treat every outbreak like a data set, the solo pacing lands exactly right.

Rebuild 3: Gangs of Deadsville
Same overhead strategy feel, different endgame. Rebuild 3 is about rebuilding civilisation after a zombie outbreak — turn-based, with survivor management and base-building. Plague Inc: Evolved flips the lens: you are the collapse. No survivors to assign, no farms to reclaim. Pure pathogen versus humanity, faster and more clinical.
Democracy 4
Both sit in the god-view sim category, but Democracy 4 models political systems, not infection vectors. Where Democracy 4 tracks voter groups and policy sliders, Plague Inc: Evolved tracks transmission traits and symptom trees. One simulates a nation’s immunity to bad policy; the other simulates humanity’s immunity to a plague. Strategy players who want one tight feedback loop — no budgets, no elections — will click with the pathogen model faster.
DEFCON
DEFCON shares the grim tone and real-time map interface, but it’s about nuclear war, not biology. Both games create a sense of creeping dread and let you zoom out to watch the world die. Plague Inc: Evolved gives you more levers to pull mid-game — evolve, devolve, adapt — while DEFCON locks you into a countdown. If you prefer adapting a strategy on the fly over managing launch codes, the pathogen route fits better.
