When output clips on default settings

Most issues come down to gain staging, not the plugin itself.

• Output clips with default settings. Nudistort pushes level hard. Drop the input gain first, then adjust. The internal headroom is generous but your DAW channel isn't.
• Plugin doesn't appear after install. On Apple Silicon machines running Logic or Ableton Live under Rosetta, the AU version sometimes hides. Rescan plugins from your DAW's plugin manager. If it still doesn't show, delete the AU cache file in ~/Library/Caches/AudioUnitCache and restart.
• Latency spikes during playback. The algorithm runs a lookahead buffer. Bounce the track or freeze it before mixing. Not a bug — by design.
• AAX version crashes Pro Tools on launch. Trash the Pro Tools preferences and let it rebuild the plugin database. Happens occasionally on macOS 10.13 and 10.14 systems.
• Sound cuts out at extreme parameter values. Some combinations of drive and texture depth push the signal beyond the internal limiter threshold. Back off one control by 5-10% and it returns.

A session with Nudistort

Say you have a clean bassline — a simple sine wave from a synth, dull and predictable. You want it to sound like failing equipment in a concrete corridor.

1. Instantiate the plugin. Drop Nudistort onto the bass channel. Default state is loud. Pull the output fader down 6 dB before you touch anything else.
2. Dial in drive. Bring the drive knob up slowly. Around 40% the sine starts to square off. At 65% it splinters into harmonics you didn't ask for. Stop there.
3. Shape the texture. Engage the noise section. Set texture depth to 30% and sweep the character control until you hear a metallic scrape layered under the original tone. Lock it in.
4. Tame the top end. The added harmonics create a brittle edge above 8 kHz. Drop a low-pass filter after the plugin, or use the internal tone control if your version has it. Cut around 7 kHz with a gentle slope.
5. Automate the chaos. Assign a macro knob to drive and texture depth. Ride it through the chorus. The bassline now breathes — clean to corroded and back.

Ten minutes from sterile to something that sounds like a short circuit with rhythm. That's the workflow: push, listen, pull back, commit.

Set output ceiling to -3 dBFS first

Out of the box, Nudistort is set to impress — which means loud and aggressive. A few tweaks make it more usable.

• Output ceiling. Default is 0 dBFS. Set it to -3 dBFS immediately. Gives your channel fader room to work and prevents inter-sample peaks on export.
• Oversampling. Off by default. Turn it to 2x for any material with content above 10 kHz. The aliasing reduction is audible on cymbals, white noise sweeps and high synth parts. 4x is overkill for most sessions but useful if you plan to pitch the result down later.
• Mix knob. Sits at 100% wet. Try 60-70% for parallel distortion on drums or vocals. Keeps the transient definition intact while adding body and filth underneath.
• Noise sync. Retriggers on note-on by default. Switch to free-running if you want the texture to drift independently across a sustained pad or drone. Much more organic for ambient work.
• MIDI learn. Right-click any control to assign a hardware knob. Map drive, texture depth and output to three encoder rows. Hands-on control changes how fast you find useful settings.

Once these are dialled in, save a user default. Every new instance starts from your baseline, not the factory preset.
