The Legend HZ is a software synthesizer modelling a Minimoog-style analog instrument, developed in collaboration with Hans Zimmer.
Chasing the Zimmer sound in a single plugin
- Composers chasing the Hans Zimmer sound with ready-made presets.
- Producers loading legacy The Legend patches into an expanded engine.
- Sound designers using MPE and MTS-ESP microtuning for expressive work.
- DAW users needing a single synth in VST, AU, and AAX formats.
The back panel hides the EQ and filter bank
- Requires macOS 10.14 or later — older Macs are out.
- The 914 Fixed Filter Bank and paragraphic EQ live on the back panel, not the front.
- Preset browsing leans on NKS; no standalone version included.
Runs Intel and Apple Silicon Macs as VST, AU, AAX
The plugin runs on Intel and Apple Silicon Macs. It supports Native Kontrol Standard for Komplete Kontrol and Maschine hardware. Formats are VST, Audio Unit, and AAX — covering Logic Pro, Ableton Live, Cubase, Pro Tools, and other major hosts.
Sound and architecture
The Legend HZ builds on the original Legend engine with added features. The factory bank holds 200 presets by Hans Zimmer and Kevin Schroeder. Version 2.1 adds a paragraphic equalizer, compressor saturation, and MTS-ESP microtuning. Patches from the original Legend load directly. A 914 Fixed Filter Bank and full MPE support round out the back panel for shaping tone and pitch per note.
No sound? Check the hidden back panel first
Most issues trace back to two things: the back panel being hidden, or an old DAW template loading the wrong plugin version.
- No sound on a preset that worked yesterday. Check the back panel. The compressor saturation knob might be dialled up and squashing output past the threshold. Or the paragraphic EQ bands are pulled down by accident. Reset both to zero and test again.
- Legacy patches sound different. The Legend HZ loads original The Legend patches, but the new voice architecture can shift gain staging. If a patch distorts, lower the oscillator mixer levels slightly. If it's quiet, check the 914 Fixed Filter Bank — a band may be cutting more than expected.
- CPU spikes with 12-voice polyphony and unison. Six VA oscillators times unison voices adds up. Bounce tracks to audio early, or drop to 6 voices on background parts. The arpeggiator and sequencer run lighter than sustained chords.
- DAW doesn't see the plugin. Rescan in VST or AU format, not both at once. Some hosts need a restart after a fresh the legend hz download. Intel Macs running older Logic versions may need the AU cache cleared manually.
Right-click any knob for instant default reset
- Right-click a knob to return to default. Works on every control, including the paragraphic EQ bands and the 914 filter sliders. No manual midi-learn needed for quick resets.
- Shift-drag for fine adjustment. All knobs and faders support this. Essential for dialling in exact filter cutoff points on the Fixed Filter Bank.
- The arpeggiator doubles as a step sequencer. Switch modes with the dropdown. Hold notes and tap through patterns — the sequencer records note order, not just pitch.
- Presets load MPE mappings automatically. When an MPE controller is connected, the patch recalls per-note pressure and slide assignments. No extra setup in the plugin.
- MTS-ESP microtuning locks to your project. Once enabled in the back panel, it follows the master tuning table from your DAW or another MTS-ESP source. Toggle off to return to equal temperament instantly.
Paragraphic EQ turns the synth into a mix tool
The paragraphic EQ on the back panel shifts The Legend HZ from a pure synth into a mixing-stage tool. Boosting low-end resonance before a compressor in the chain became a one-plugin job. The compressor saturation itself adds bite at moderate settings — producers working on hybrid orchestral cues lean on it to push strings and brass patches forward without leaving the synth.
MTS-ESP support matters most for film composers using non-Western scales. Loading a microtuning table now happens at the project level, not per-patch. The 50 new Kevin Schroeder presets fill gaps in percussive plucks and dark arpeggiated sequences — categories the original 200 leaned away from.
Patch compatibility with The Legend means projects from older sessions open with both plugins side by side. A track using The Legend for bass can stay untouched while a new instance of The Legend HZ handles pads with the Fixed Filter Bank. No manual migration needed.
