Sidechain any lane to the kick with Duck
The update brought a Duck feature for sidechaining sequencer lanes to the kick, buffered input for DAW recording, and offline use without the mobile app.
Runs on Intel and Apple Silicon from 10.13 up
Life requires macOS 10.13 or later. It supports both Intel and Apple Silicon Macs. It runs as a standalone application and as a plugin in your DAW.
What do I need to capture sounds?
The Life Field Recorder app for Android and iOS lets you record sounds anywhere. Offline use in version 1.2 also lets you work with files stored on your computer.
Turns door slams and hisses into beats
Life turns audio — recorded or imported — into beats. It generates rhythms from everyday sounds, with sidechaining and buffered recording keeping things tight in a mix.
Break loop ruts with sounds no sample pack holds
Three kinds of Mac users find Life clicking straight away.
Beat makers who hit a loop rut. Dragging in a door slam or a coffee-machine hiss gives you patterns no sample pack contains. Life pushes you away from the grid and towards texture.
Field-recording hobbyists with a DAW habit. You already walk around with the Life Field Recorder app on your phone. Life closes the gap between capture and arrangement — no editing, no slicing, just a beat from the sound you grabbed at the station.
Producers mixing organic and electronic layers. A foley-style rhythm under a clean kick can anchor a track. The Duck feature added in 1.2 keeps those layers from fighting the low end.
Offline use landed in the latest update
Drag, drop, process—no phone required
Yes. Version 1.2 added offline use with files stored or recorded directly on your Mac. Drag any audio in and Life processes it. The Field Recorder and DAW Recorder apps are conveniences, not requirements.
Will it fit an existing template?
Life runs as a plugin in your current DAW. Route it like any drum instrument. The buffered input added in 1.2 means you can record DAW audio straight in without fussing with routing outside the session.
Can it replace a drum machine?
Not fully. Life generates rhythms from texture, not synthesis. It sits next to your drum machine, not instead of it. Use it for top layers, percussive beds and grooves that feel human because the source sound was.
Dehumaniser II sculpts creatures; Life builds rhythms
Life vs. Dehumaniser II. Dehumaniser sculpts monster voices and sound effects from recorded audio. Life takes a different path — it turns audio into rhythmic patterns, not processed single hits. If you design creature sounds, Dehumaniser fits. If you want a beat from a train announcement, Life gets there faster.
Life vs. Playbeat. Playbeat generates drum patterns from algorithms. Life generates them from your own audio. Both offer endless variations, but Life ties the result to a real-world source. Playbeat stays inside the box; Life reaches outside it. The Duck feature and DAW Recorder app give Life a practical edge for mixing field audio into a session without leaving your desk.
Life vs. standard sampler instruments. A sampler plays back what you load. Life interprets what you load and builds new rhythms from it. The two complement each other. Sample a sound, play it chromatically in a sampler. Feed the same sound to Life and get a groove you did not program.
