Ticked

A clean digital mix can feel sterile. You need something that breathes dust and flutter into a track. Mellotron V solves that by giving you the exact mechanics of the original — without the backache.
Thickening a string part with real tape-wow and noise
- Thickening a string part with real tape-wow and noise.
- Loading your own samples and running them through the Mellotron's signal path.
- Quick inspiration from 65 original tape banks.

What moves a mix
The controls are split into three clear sections. The Mechanics panel sets the motor behaviour — attack time, flutter, and pitch drift. A slight nudge here makes a static pad wobble like it's on a worn-out capstan. The Noise section dials in key-click and tape hiss. Pull it back for a cleaner tone, or push it forward to place the sound in a physical room. The Tape controls shape saturation and crosstalk. Combined with the onboard effects, you can warp a simple choir into a gritty, unstable wash.
The user-sample loader turns the plug-in into a character box. Drop in a vocal chop or a synth stab, and it inherits the same mechanical fingerprint as the built-in banks. Every hit lands slightly differently.
A producer's morning
A composer scores a tense drama cue. Strings in the box sound too pristine — modern, glossy, wrong for the scene. Mellotron V sits on an insert. Three clicks: load a flute-strings tape bank, push the flutter to 11 o'clock, and bring tape hiss to 35%. The part now breathes. The director asks what changed. Nothing, except the sound now belongs in the shot.
First-time traps
- Loading samples and expecting instant magic. User samples need trimming to sit right across 96 semitones. A raw vocal chop spread three octaves will not sound musical until you set the root note and loop points.
- Ignoring the Mechanics panel entirely. A flat attack and zero drift make the instrument behave like a clean rompler. You lose the reason it exists. Dial in at least a touch of pitch wobble before reaching for effects.
- Stacking too many tape banks in a track without cleaning the low-mids. The Mellotron's body resonance piles up fast. High-pass filtering around 100 Hz on every instance keeps a mix from turning to mud.
- Running the noise section wide open by default. Key-click and hiss sound authentic in solo. In a dense arrangement they mask transients. Automate the noise level per section instead of leaving it static.
- Preset playlist naming and editing are tidier.
- Favourite presets sort correctly in shuffle mode.
- Preset search and naming behaviour improved.
- Playlists no longer disappear after a reinstall.
- Several crash fixes, including preset browsing.
- macOS 11 or later
- Apple Silicon or Intel processor
- 64-bit plug-in host
