Requires macOS 11 and a DAW host
It works on both Apple Silicon and Intel Macs. You need macOS 11.0 or later. There is no standalone app — this is a plugin only, loaded inside your DAW.
Ideal spots for grit and glue
Drop it on individual tracks that need grit, like a clean synth line or a vocal that sounds too digital. It also works well on drum buses and mix buses where you want cohesive, lo-fi glue.
What kind of jobs suit it best?
It makes any audio source sound like it is played back on worn analogue tape. Use it for quick texture work — pitch wobble, hiss, degradation — without deep menu diving. It is built for speed.
Is it an instrument?
No. Tape MELLO-FI is an audio effect, not a virtual instrument. It processes audio that is already in your session; it does not generate its own sounds.
Double-click reset and Option-click flutter bypass
- Double-click to reset — any knob returns to its default value with a quick double-click. No hunting for a zero position when you want to start fresh.
- Flutter bypass — hold
Optionand click the Flutter Rate knob to temporarily kill the pitch wobble. Useful for checking how much movement you have dialled in. - Output trim behaviour — the Output knob sits post-effect. Crank the input stage for saturation, then pull the output back to avoid clipping your DAW channel.
- Wet/dry mix as a tone blend — set the Mix knob around 40–50% instead of 100%. You keep transient clarity from the dry signal while the tape character sits underneath.
- MIDI learn without menus — right-click any control, move a hardware knob, and it is mapped. No setup window required.
Snags you might hit
Plugin does not appear in the DAW
Most common cause: the DAW has not scanned the correct folder. Arturia installs to /Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/Components. Rescan that path from your DAW's plugin manager. If you use Logic Pro, quit and reopen — it rescans on launch.
Activation loops in Arturia Software Center
If activation spins endlessly, close the Arturia Software Center, disconnect from any VPN, then reopen it. VPNs occasionally block the licence check.
High CPU on Apple Silicon
If the plugin runs under Rosetta while your DAW is native, you will see unnecessary CPU load. Check your DAW's plugin info panel — it should report Apple Silicon, not Intel. Reinstall the latest version if it shows the wrong architecture.
Noise floor too loud at idle
Tape MELLO-FI adds hiss even when audio is not playing. The Noise knob sets a constant level; it does not duck. Pull it to zero if you need silence between sections.
