Designers sending quick comps, developers prepping app assets, and anyone who hates waiting for uploads. Compresto is a desktop compressor that does not need a connection—everything stays local.
Is it really offline?
Yes. No account, no cloud processing, no analytics phoning home. You drag files in, the app compresses them using FFmpeg under the hood. It handles MP4 and WebM output, transparent video, and even lets you pull a GIF from a video clip. Batch processing means you queue up a stack of files and walk away.
What do you need to run it?
macOS 13 or later, on Intel or Apple Silicon. Install is the usual routine—open the disk image, drag the app to Applications, launch it. If you use Raycast, there is a Compresto extension for quick access without digging through Finder. File size drops can hit 90%, though your mileage depends on the source material and settings you pick.
Overlooked shortcuts
Three things most people miss in the first week:
- Drag onto the Dock icon. You do not need to open the main window first. Drop a file or folder straight onto the Compresto icon and processing starts immediately with your last-used settings.
- Right-click in Finder. The Services menu picks up Compresto once it is installed. Select a handful of images, right-click, and compress them without switching windows.
- Quality level 3. People jump to 4 or 5 assuming they need maximum preservation. Level 3 often cuts file size by half with no visible difference on screen—worth trying before you commit to a larger output.
40 MB to 4 MB exports for UI and motion designers
UI and motion designers who export lots of short screen recordings. Compresto turns a 40 MB capture into 4 MB without noticeable quality loss—ideal for Slack threads and Notion pages. Web developers get the most from the WebM export and transparent video support. Photographers sending contact sheets can batch-drop a folder of JPEGs and get lightweight previews in seconds. The watched-folder feature suits anyone with a repetitive export pipeline: set it once, and every file saved to that folder gets compressed automatically.
Reinstall from a fresh disk image when components act up
Component installation failures. Version 1.30.1 addressed this, but if FFmpeg components act up after a macOS update, a clean reinstall of the app usually sorts it. Drag Compresto to the Trash, empty it, then reinstall from a fresh disk image.
Default app registration. The same update stopped Compresto from claiming movie, PNG, and JPEG file associations. If yours still shows as the default opener, check System Settings > Desktop & Dock and reassign your preferred apps there.
Output file not shrinking much. Some formats are already heavily compressed. A JPEG at 85% quality or an H.264 MP4 at low bitrate has little left to give. Try a different quality level or switch output format—WebM often squeezes more out of video than MP4 at the same perceived quality. If you use the Raycast extension and nothing happens, confirm the app is in your Applications folder. The extension looks for it there.
Compresto 1.31 unblocks compression for non‑Latin filenames and carries a few under‑the‑hood tweaks.
- macOS 13 or later
- Apple Silicon or Intel 64-bit
