Planar Light. It's a new material type that turns any geometry into an area light source, giving you precise control over product shots without placing separate light objects.
What job does the new Light Tool do?
It simplifies placement. Click on a surface, and a physical light snaps to it, keeping accurate falloff and direction. No more manual translation in the viewport.
How does AR export fit into a rendering workflow?
USDz and GLB export lets you send a scene straight to a phone or browser for quick client reviews. It's a presentation checkpoint, not a final render.
Why does the Re‑tessellate scripting update matter?
Where imported CAD edges fall apart
Slow viewport performance on Apple Silicon
KeyShot runs natively on M‑series chips, but real‑time ray tracing still leans heavily on the GPU. If the viewport lags:
- Drop Real‑time Ray Tracing to Maximum time or switch to Product mode in the Performance settings.
- Reduce Ray Bounces temporarily while positioning the camera.
- Check that Use GPU is toggled on in Preferences — it sometimes defaults to CPU after an update.
Materials look flat after import
FBX and OBJ files often arrive without scale metadata. KeyShot interprets scene units literally, so a 200‑metre‑tall object loses all reflection detail. Open Edit > Set Scene Units and match the real‑world size. Then hit Ctrl‑U (or ⌘‑U) to enable the ground plane shadow — that single click fixes most "flat" complaints.
Physical Lights disappear in the render
The new Light Tool places lights as geometry. If they vanish at render time, the material assigned to the light geometry is likely not a Planar Light type. Select the geometry, open the Material tab, and switch the type from Advanced to Planar Light. The thumbnail should glow immediately.
Host name errors during installation
If the server throws a Host or Host name error, the local hosts file hasn't been updated. Open Terminal and use the provided command to map the host to 127.0.0.1 in /etc/hosts. Restart the Mac afterwards. Skipping the restart keeps the old DNS cache alive.
Swap the real‑time view to sRGB color space
1. GPU rendering priority
Head to Preferences > General and confirm that Use GPU is on. KeyShot often ships with CPU‑only defaults. On an M2 Max or M3 Pro, this single toggle halves render times for medium scenes.
2. Default scene units
Set your preferred units in Edit > Set Scene Units and tick Remember as default. Every imported model will then land at the correct scale before you even touch the camera.
3. Hotkey for Add Studio
Version 2025.1 introduced a hotkey for Add Studio. Bind it to something quick — Shift‑S works well — in Preferences > Hotkeys. Cycling through lighting setups with one keystroke keeps the flow going during client calls.
4. Disable automatic ground plane
The default ground plane casts a shadow on an invisible floor. If you import your own set geometry, turn it off in Environment > Ground to avoid double shadows that confuse the render engine.
Can KeyShot match my studio’s existing CAD pipeline?
Does KeyShot run on a basic M1 MacBook Air?
Yes. The native ARM build launches fine on every Apple Silicon machine from the M1 onward. The real‑time viewport stays responsive on 8 GB RAM for scenes under about 200 parts. Larger CAD assemblies — think a full engine block — will swap heavily. External SSD scratch space helps if RAM is tight.
Which 3D modelling apps plug into KeyShot on a Mac?
Standalone import handles OBJ, FBX, 3DS, IGES, STEP, JT, Collada, and Parasolid files directly. Plugin workflows exist for Maya, SketchUp, Rhinoceros, SolidWorks, and several others. The plugin bridges let you send geometry from the modeller to KeyShot without a manual export step.
Is the interface available in languages other than English?
Twelve languages, including Russian, German, Spanish, Italian, Traditional Chinese, Simplified Chinese, Korean, Polish, French, Czech, and Japanese. Switch in Preferences — no separate language pack download needed.
Can I export a scene for someone who doesn't own KeyShot?
Yes. The 2025.1 release added USD and glTF export alongside the AR formats USDz and GLB. Drop a GLB into any Chrome browser and the client walks around the model without installing anything.
Strip the environment but keep the ground shadow
Enable Transparent Background in the Render output settings. Combine it with Render Alpha for post‑work in Photoshop. The ground shadow still renders, but the background environment gets stripped to transparency.
It lets studios automate geometry refinement for batch imports. High‑poly CAD data gets optimised without opening each file by hand.
- A new hotkey now triggers Add Studio.
- The Light Tool places Physical Lights directly on surfaces in the viewport.
- The Scripting API exposes the Re‑tessellate Tool for automated geometry refinement.
- macOS 12 or later
- Apple Silicon or Intel 64‑bit processor
Questions the team asks
It imports over 30 native CAD and 3D formats, including SOLIDWORKS, CATIA, STEP, IGES, FBX, OBJ, and Collada, plus direct plugin workflows for Maya and SketchUp.
