If you’ve ever found a whiteboard or a stack of sticky notes useful for thinking, SimpleMind Pro is that, but tidy. It's a mind mapping app where ideas branch out from a central node.

Start by pressing Space to add a sibling topic. Drag any topic to reposition it instantly. That direct manipulation is the core of it, and it's quick.

Next, pick a visual style from the toolbar. Styles change colours, borders and lines across the whole map in one go. If you prefer your own palette, open the colour picker and tweak individual nodes. The change is immediate.

Finally, select some text in any other app and copy it. Back in SimpleMind, paste it. The app creates a new mind map from the clipboard contents, which saves the typing for a first draft.

Beach ball rarely appears, even with 100+ topics

Working with SimpleMind Pro on macOS feels light. I rarely see the beach ball, even on maps with over a hundred topics. The editor redraws quickly when you drag a branch to a new position, and autolayout snaps everything into place without a lag spike. That matters when you’re reorganising ideas mid-flow.

Memory use stays modest. Activity Monitor shows it hovering around 120–180 MB with a few complex maps open—no leaks I’ve noticed across a full working day. The app handles both Intel and Apple Silicon Macs natively, so there’s no Rosetta penalty on M-series machines.

Stability is solid under version 2.10.1. Undo and redo behave reliably across cut-and-paste operations, which is where some mind mapping tools trip up. I’ve thrown clipboard imports, colour palette changes and rapid node additions at it in the same session, and it hasn’t crashed once.

Dragging topics now causes fewer accidental overlaps

The 2.10 release tightened a few everyday interactions. Topic dragging now respects the automatic layout more carefully—fewer accidental overlaps when you drop a node between two existing ones. The style palette previews are faster to load, which you notice when switching between maps with different themes.

Pasting from the clipboard got smarter. Where earlier versions sometimes flattened structured text, 2.10 preserves hierarchy better from sources like outliners and bullet lists. The Mac App Store edition remains sandboxed and matches the direct Mac edition feature for feature, so the choice between them doesn’t affect your workflow.
